As freelancers, many members of the creative community — writers, artists, and filmmakers — often struggle to find the best health insurance for themselves and their families. Since artists typically do not work as employees, they are not eligible for insurance through a company. And it’s not always an option to tag onto a partner’s or parent’s policy. But there are still plenty of options out there, if you know how to find them. Emerging and veteran artists may not realize that, in fact, they are eligible as artists to join certain organizations, and thus obtain a variety of more affordable health insurance options. So The Independent put together this list, broken down by state with the aim of helping artists learn their insurance options.
The Actors Fund has a health insurance resource center which provides several pamphlets, such as Getting and Keeping Health Insurance and city guides, such as How to Get Affordable Health Care in New York City.
The Actors Fund also maintains the site Access to Health Insurance / Resources for Care which breaks down health insurance options by state.
An artist may be eligible for insurance as a member of a national guild, such as the Writers Guild of America West or East, Screen Actors Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). The Authors Guild has discounted insurance options in New York, Massachusetts and Florida.
In addition to the following options, several states have mandated that insurance companies sell policies directly to individuals, as well as businesses. Several states, such as Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Vermont, even take it one step further, requiring insurers to sell individual policies regardless of any pre-existing conditions. A great resource with links for each state is provided by the Universal Health Care Action Network.
