The "Washington Consensus" refers to a set of policy prescriptions that institutions including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund advocated during the 1990s. In Latin America, critics of the consensus say that these policies, when widely adopted, led to grave economic instability and inequality exemplified by the Argentine economic crisis that started in 1999.
